As seen in a recent announcement by the Ugandan Ministry of ICT, Uganda is certainly joining the train of countries quickly adopting the use of the blockchain. The announcement revealed that the country plans on using the technology in different sectors to improve efficiency in public service delivery. The use of the blockchain as seen in recent times have ranged from, voters registration, elections, land registry, tracking of shipments to digital identity management and so much more.
The ICT Ministry permanent secretary, Mr. Vicente Bagiire Waiswa, stated: “[The] government is going to use blockchain technology where it is appropriate to provide seamless services to the general public.”
He also stated that the adoption of the technology will limit the time spent in accessing government services, payment systems and so much more. Also, this will create a proper record of transactions and better management and access to the records on the decentralised ledger. He stated that the major effect will be the effect it will have on financial systems and industrial structures.
This is timely as it coincides with the hosting of a major blockchain conference coming up this month in Uganda.
