On Thursday 12th April 2018, Payment giant Mastercard announced that it was hiring 175 new technology developers amongst which were blockchain experts. This was according to a press release. These developers will work from the headquarters of the firm’s research and development arm, Mastercard Labs to create more efficient payment systems.
Mastercard Ireland’s country manager – Sonya Geelon said that mastercard is seeking ways to have financial services gain a broadened access. In a statement, Sonya said
“We’re driving projects that promote financial inclusion at home and abroad, and are working to provide consumers, businesses and governments with the most innovative, safe and secure ways to pay”
In 2016, Mastercard released a set of experimental blockchain-based API’s, telling CoinDesk that its goal was to
“..give developers the chance to work on emerging technologies that haven’t yet been commercialised by us”
Given that mastercard has had its eyes on the blockchain technology for a while (they’ve in the past, made efforts to obtain patent related to blockchain), this development is remarkable for the firm.
